SDS authoring with GHS hazard data

See hazards while the formula can still change, and keep every SDS linked to the formula it describes.

A hazard found after the formula is final can force late reformulation. A safety data sheet that lags behind a product can delay a launch or shipment, and a mismatch between the document and the product raises regulatory questions. In most companies the formula lives in the R&D system and the SDS lives somewhere else, so every new sample, reformulation or raw material swap means exporting the composition and typing it in again. SDS authoring with GHS hazard data shows how to connect safety data sheets to the formulation work they describe.

‍

How do you keep a safety data sheet in step with the formula?

Keep the SDS on the same records as the formula. When each raw material carries its CAS number and GHS hazard data, formulators see the pictograms beside each quantity while the formula can still change. An SDS record linked to the experiment can then load its composition table, with the name, CAS number and weight percentage of each ingredient, instead of having it retyped, and the record moves through review with an audit log of each field edit before it exports as a PDF. The SDS author still classifies the mixture; the formula, the ingredient hazards and the review trail stay connected around that decision.

What's inside

Inside this guide:

  • Why a separate SDS process turns every formula change into a copy, and questions to ask about yours
  • The connected chain from ingredient records to the experiment, the SDS record, review and the SDS PDF
  • Three ways hazard data reaches an ingredient record: public data by CAS number, supplier SDS uploads and your own team
  • Seeing GHS pictograms in the formula, beside each quantity
  • An SDS record with all 16 GHS sections as structured fields, matched to your own template
  • Loading the composition from the linked experiment, including intermediates
  • Review workflows, the audit log and what a reviewer checks before approval
  • Exporting the reviewed record as an SDS PDF, and a practical path to get started with one product family

FAQs

What does the SDS authoring guide cover?

How to connect safety data sheet authoring to formulation work: keeping CAS numbers and GHS hazard data on each ingredient, showing pictograms in the recipe, holding the 16 SDS sections as structured fields, loading the composition from the linked experiment, reviewing with an audit log, and exporting the SDS PDF.

Where does the GHS hazard data come from?

Three ways. Public chemical data by CAS number can fill GHS pictograms, H-statements, signal word, flash point, density and inventory flags such as TSCA and California Prop 65. An uploaded supplier SDS PDF adds the GHS pictograms it shows. Your team can maintain any other ingredient attribute, and a sync does not replace a value a user edited unless an overwrite is forced.

Does Uncountable classify the mixture automatically?

No. The experiment header can combine the pictograms of its ingredients as a prompt for the formulator, but the SDS author still classifies the mixture. Uncountable keeps the formula, ingredient hazards, SDS fields and review trail connected around that decision.

How does the SDS composition stay current with the formula?

The SDS record links to the experiment it describes. One action clears the composition table and writes the name, CAS number and weight percentage of each ingredient, and intermediates can expand into their raw materials. The composition updates only when a user starts the action, so the author decides when the SDS takes a new version of the formula.

Who is this guide for?

R&D leaders, product safety teams and SDS authors, and regulatory teams who want SDS authoring connected to formulation work instead of rebuilt from exports and spreadsheets.
