About the customer
Mitra Chem is an advanced battery materials company on a mission to accelerate the global transition to clean energy. By developing and commercializing next-generation lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) cathode materials, Mitra Chem supports the growing demand for safe, efficient, and domestically produced batteries.
The challenge: before Uncountable
When Marie Herring joined Mitra Chem as its second employee, she brought a clear vision: build a data-driven materials science company from the ground up. Having seen firsthand the mess that unfolds when scientific data is stored in spreadsheets, siloed across teams, and lost in translation, she adopted Uncountable even before the lab was fully operational.
“We didn't want our earliest experiments lost in Excel files, inaccessible to the broader team.” — Marie Herring
Choosing the right partner
Though already familiar with Uncountable, Mitra Chem conducted a thorough evaluation of available lab management systems. Alternatives quickly fell short.
“We evaluated multiple solutions, but Uncountable’s flexibility, cloud-native design, and strong API integrations made it the clear choice.”— Marie Herring
Implementation: tailored for battery science
Over the course of a month, Mitra Chem’s team worked closely with Uncountable’s implementation engineers to design a process-centric data model customized for battery materials workflows. Every step — from raw materials through slurry preparation, electrode manufacturing, and cell assembly — was mapped and linked through related sample records. Each sample was barcoded and tracked, creating an unbroken digital trail.
Key capabilities
- End-to-end sample tracking: All samples are barcoded and linked across process steps, providing full traceability from raw material to final test result.
- Custom workflows: Process step-based sample relationships reflect the physical flow of materials science experiments.
- Integrated ticketing: Scientists can request characterizations and track experiment status in a centralized, sample-aware ticketing system.
- Data integration via API: The data science team exports structured data from Uncountable into their internal warehouse to run proprietary models.
The impact
Uncountable saves the team hours each week by eliminating manual data handling and simplifying collaboration. Even customer-facing and business development staff use the platform to access up-to-date sample data, enabling more informed client conversations. With a recent $100M grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, Mitra Chem is preparing to open a new manufacturing facility in Michigan, with Uncountable remaining central to its infrastructure.
